Important Update: USCIS Requires Recent Photos for Immigration Forms

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has issued new guidance to enhance the accuracy and security of immigration documents. Effective immediately, USCIS now requires that all photos submitted for immigration forms be no older than three years. This update limits the age of photos used in applications, ensuring that identity verification is accurate and reliable, a critical step in preventing fraud and identity theft.

Under the new policy, self-submitted photos will no longer be accepted. Only photographs taken by USCIS or other authorized entities will be used, guaranteeing that all images included in immigration documents meet stringent security standards. Previously, during the COVID-19 pandemic, photos could be reused for up to 10 years. This flexibility, though helpful at the time, made it harder for USCIS to accurately verify identities.

The updated policy affects several key forms, including Form I-90 (Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card), Form I-485 (Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status), Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization), and Form N-600 (Application for Certificate of Citizenship). Applicants will need to provide a new photo if their previous one is older than three years, even if they previously submitted a photograph for another application.

If you are preparing to file or update your immigration documents, it’s important to ensure your photos meet the new requirements. For guidance on how these changes may affect your application, contact us at 703-348-1663.
